  • Introduction We aim to cater for the needs of all visitors in this 139-bed hostel, a 3 storey building which is set within the National Trust Ilam Park Estate. The following statement is a summary of our provision. If you have any specific questions about access, please call us and we will endeavour to help. Pre-Arrival Good train links to within approx 20 miles (Derby, Matlock, Uttoxeter) Bus services to Ashbourne which is approximately 6 miles from Ilam Hall. Taxi service available from Ashbourne Shop-mobility schemes are situated in the area as follows: Derby (22 miles) – 01332 200320 Stoke-on-Trent (19 miles) – 01782 233333 Burton-upon-Trent (25 miles) – 01283 515191 Chesterfield (32 miles) – 01246 559331 The hostel’s details can be seen on YHA’s website: www.yha.org.uk You can contact the hostel by phone, fax or e-mail (details at the end of this document). Arrival & Car Parking Facilities Ample parking in National Trust Car Park (NT charges apply). Some parking is allowed immediately outside the hostel - please ask at reception on arrival. Please try to provide advance notice if assistance will be needed to move to and from cars. Sloped driveway with even surface leading from car park to hostel. The centre of the village is about 300 yards from the hostel. There is a tarmaced driveway from the hostel into the village. Main Entrance & Reception Wheelchair access to the hostel is through the dining room to reception. There are 2 shallow steps into main entrance and a further 7 steps up to ground floor/reception. Induction Loop at reception Seating is available in Reception Hallway and in nearby quiet room. Emergency phone to connect to a member of staff (on site) at night Public Area – General Good colour contrast to floor, walls and doorways throughout the building. Well-lit corridors. Even flagstones to downstairs floor Carpet on stairs and corridors with contrasting nosings to stairs Public Areas – WC’s One WC in entrance to downstairs bedrooms which meets DDA standards for wheelchair users. One WC in main entrance of hostel which does not currently meet DDA standards for wheelchair users. National Trust Public toilet in building behind hostel which allows wheelchair access. Public Areas – Dining Room & Lounge Level floor with wheelchair access to both rooms. Dining Room tables are moveable. Chairs with and without armrests are available. Table service is available in Dining Room if requested in advance at Reception. Self-Catering Kitchen Wheelchair access to kitchen from outside door. Flight of 15 stairs to access from within the hostel. These stairs curve at 90 degrees part way. 12 gas hobs built in to wooden bench – height 93cm/36.5 inches fixed to wall. Laundry & drying facilities Access through self-catering dining room for wheelchair. Uneven tiled floor in drying room Washing Machine and Drying Machine sited at higher level (top of machine height = 130cm/51 inches). Assistance can be provided on request from Reception. Meeting Rooms One classroom on first floor of Brew House Block. One flight of narrow stone stairs to access. Conference room on ground floor of main building – five wooden steps to access. Bedrooms – Ground Floor One 4 bed and one 6 bedroom on ground floor of Brew House Block which allow for wheelchair access. Specially adapted washroom adjacent to these rooms. Bottom bunks in each room specially adapted to allow easier access and use of hoists (not provided). Sinks in both rooms with level taps fitted. Individual bed lights fitted adjacent to bed head. Tea & Coffee facilities available in each room. Bedrooms – Brew House 1st Floor Narrow stone staircase has one flight of 21 steps and two curves at 90-degree angles. Handrails are fitted on one side. 1st Floor - one 6 bed and one 4 bed bedroom with en-suite shower in each room. 2nd Floor - Narrow wooden staircase with sharp curve from 1st Floor of 16 stairs. Single handrail for full length of stairs. Handrails are fitted to both sides to approximately half way up stairs. 2nd Floor - one 6 bedded and one 4 bedded rooms with en-suite shower in each room. Two toilets are situated on first floor. None on second floor. Individual bed lights fitted adjacent to bed head. Tea and coffee facilities provided in each room. Bedrooms – Main Building – First Floor Wide flight of stairs to 1st Floor has two flights of stairs. The first set is wide and has 7 stone steps. Second flight is wide with 14 stairs with 90-degree curve near bottom. Handrails are fitted to both sides 1st Floor comprises one 2-bedded room, one 3-bedded room, four 4-bedded rooms, one 5-bedded room, one 6-bedded room, two 8-bedded rooms. A further small flight of 5 stairs lead up to one 4-bedded room with an en-suite shower. A further flight of 5 curved stairs lead down to one 12-bedded room and another one step down to one 4-bedded room. All rooms have washbasins. Individual bed lights fitted adjacent to bed head. Bedrooms – Main Building – Second Floor Flight of 9 leads to 2nd Floor Handrails fitted to both sides. 2nd Floor comprises one 4-bedded room, one 6-bedded room and 3 8-bedded rooms. A further flight of 9 narrow stairs leads to a further bedroom of 14 beds. There are no handrails to these stairs. All rooms have washbasins. Individual bed lights fitted adjacent to bed head with the exception of one 8 bedded room (Room 17). Washrooms – Ground Floor Male washroom comprising 5 showers and one toilet with access from 1st Floor only down one narrow flight of 18 stairs with 3 curved corners and handrail on one side only. Access from outside ground floor door can be allowed by prior arrangement. Washrooms – First Floor Male washroom comprising 5 toilets, 1 shower and 2 wash cubicles Female Shower room comprising 4 individual shower cubicles. Female Washroom comprising 5 toilets and two wash hand basins. Washrooms – Second Floor No washrooms are situated on second floor. Bedrooms all have washbasins. Single toilet situated at one end of second floor corridor. Grounds & Gardens Ground leading from hostel to ground floor bedrooms in Brew House building is sloped. Grounds belong to the National Trust and are open to the public. Several acres of varied level grounds. Some areas are suitable for wheelchair access please see contact details below for National Trust South Peak Estate for further information. There are a number of benches at various points on the higher level of the grounds. Cycle Shed is approximately 20 yards from dining room entrance to the hostel and a similar distance from ground floor bedrooms. Additional Information No pets or dogs (but service dogs are welcome by prior arrangements). No smoking within or adjacent to the building. Disability awareness courses – as part of the ‘Welcome Host’ scheme – are undertaken by all of our staff. A member of staff is always available on site, including at night (access via emergency telephones, at reception, outside back door to hostel, and from brewhouse ground floor bedroom area and first floor). Emergency lighting and fire alarms are fitted. We ensure that all guests are evacuated in the event of fire or any emergency requiring evacuation. Evacuation procedures shown in each bedroom on back of door Mobile phone reception is not possible at Ilam Hall. Pay phone is situated in main hostel on ground floor.
