“Not as good as we expected”

We first visited this hotel after it was refurbished some years ago whilst staying at its then 'sister' hotel The Punchbowl at Crosthwaite. At this time we could not stay at The Plough because the rooms had not been finished. We did however have some excellent evening meals when visiting the hotel during this period. And we looked forward to actually staying at the hotel some time in the future.
So as we were visiting Cumbria for New Year we again stayed 3 nights at the Punchbowl which was still excellent both for service, accommodation and food. We then had two nights at the Plough and were very disappointed by the change in service and the food. The room was clean and comfortable, but there was no shower cap and when asked for one was told that there were none in the housekeeper's cupboard, Tables in the dining rooms were full of dirt in gaps in the wooden table tops. At both breakfast and dinner we were asked what we wanted to drink before we had even been seated at the table. The dinner menu was poor and presented on tatty cards. The fish and chips ordered for dinner were floating in grease and all we had in the way of an apology was a cursory "oh sorry, would you like a desert". Breakfast the first morning, there was no fruit compote and the second morning there were no croissants and no cooked breakfast until after 10 a.m. as the chef's car had broken down. It just seemed no one really cared and none of the staff had been properly trained. Even the receptionist whistled as he rummaged through a drawer for our booking when we checked in. We had intended to stay 3 nights but left after 2.
