Very soon the exhibition and roadshow season will be upon us again soon here are a few posts about this year’s events. Naidex is taking place at its usual venue the NEC from the 20th – 22nd April and includes features such as New Product Showcases, Car Zone, Meet the OT, the Communication Village, Sensory Garden as well as a Lifestyle Seminar & Demo Area.
Naidex has also announced that ”Shannon Murray will be opening the event at 10:00am on Tuesday April 20th at the Birmingham NEC. Shannon is without doubt the UK’s most recognisable disabled model and recently starred in the Channel 4 series How to Look Good Naked. In addition to opening Naidex, Shannon will also be giving a short talk and answering questions within the lifestyle and demonstration zone at 1:30pm.”
OpenBritain partners DisabledGo will be at the event so why not pop along to visit them and other holiday exhibitors.

Situated on the shore with fabulous views over the sea to the Isle of Mull the Ledaig Caravan Site is “A wonderful 30-acre park that has been awarded the David Bellamy Conservation Award, it is situated on a 2 mile sand and shingle beach on Ardmucknish Bay. Here sailing, water sports and safe bathing can be enjoyed by all the family. Some pitches at the caravan site are almost on the water’s edge and all of them face the sea, offering panoramic view to the beautiful Isle of Mull.”
Although you may have your own suitable facilities in your caravan or camper the site also has a bathroom equipped for disabled people including a WC with grab rails and a level access shower.

Cambushinnie Croft is on a working farm in Cromlix, Perthshire and was completed in 2008. The farm is surrounded by open views of the Ochil Hills and is also only 4 miles away from the Cathedral town of Dunblane.
The 3 bedroom property sleeps up to 6 people and one of the bedrooms is on the ground floor making it accessible for wheelchair users. This bedroom also has an en-suite wet room with shower. Cambushinnie Croft has been assessed by Visit Scotland and has been awarded a Category 2.

The Lovat Lodge Hotel overlooks the Moray Firth in Scotland and is located near to Inverness. The hotel is adapted with facilities including lever taps, adjustable beds, accessible bathrooms and walk-in showers. Lovat Lodge is wheelchair accessible and has wheelchair accessible suites with bathrooms. The staff also have experience in the requirements of disabled people and they have equipment such as wheelchairs and motorised buggies which maybe available during your stay. You should contact the hotel for further information.

Crathie Opportunity Holidays are 4 self-catering cottages in the restored Manse Courtyard of historic Crathie Kirk, Aberdeenshire. Located in the Cairngorm National Park, Crathie lies between the villages of Braemar and Ballater some 50 miles west of Aberdeen.
The 4 cottages are all named after glens near Crathie and all have level ground floor access throughout, fully accessible kitchens, level access showers, height adjustable beds and ceiling tracking hoists. Primrose cottage constructed Primrose Court 1 and 2 in 2007 with the disabled traveller in mind. They provide the same facilities as Primrose Lodge such as 2 beds, 2 bathrooms with the addition of double ended Jacuzzi bath, en-suite 4-poster, electrically operated bed, twin room, flat screen TVs throughout, dish washer and washing machine. They are both Non-Smoking apart from where smoking is permitted outside on balconies from the lounge.
Both are flat, with level access and have private drives and parking adjacent to the units. Pets are welcome and they are set in 1 acre garden and within a five minute walk is the Cross Keys Inn, a delightful old country pub, serving bar meals. The little village of Tebay has two churches, two pubs, a railway club and pretty walks along the banks of the River Lune.
Tebay is situated 16 miles from Penrith to the north, 11 miles from Kendal to the south and almost adjacent to the north Lakes and Yorkshire Dales. The Howgill fells, as yet one of the quieter places for walkers, are the hills located within easy reach of the village. The Scottish border is approximately one hours drive north, making Tebay and Primrose Cottage an ideal overnight stop for journeys up and down the country, or an excellent centre to access Cumbria, the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales.

Irton House Farm is set in 240 acres of pasture and woodland and commands probably one of the finest views to be found in the Northern Lakes. It is a working sheep farm and was chosen as the venue for the BBC series ‘One Man and His Dog’.
Within easy driving distance are Derwent Water, Thirlmere, Ullswater and the famous waterfall ‘AiraForce’, Buttermere, Loweswater and Crummock Water. The towns of Keswick and Cockermouth, the birthplace of the poet William Wordsworth, are also nearby.
The property is made up of 6 cottages, The Robins, Jinney and Granary which all sleep 2 people, while The Swallows and Shepherd’s Rest that sleep 4 people as well as the Martins which sleeps 6. Newlands Country House, Southwold is located near to the town centre and just a 10 minute drive from Minsere Bird Sanctuary. They also offer exceptional facilities for people with mobility impairments, an indoor heated swimming pool, ample off road car parking, tea and coffee making equipment.
The accommodation for disabled people comprises of four purposes built Garden Rooms offer ground floor accommodation with doors that are easy to open. The rooms are large enough to accommodate extra beds for carers and care assistants.

Accentuate have just launched their first newsletter which is now available online. Accentuate is an ambitious transformational programme of 15 projects and they state on their about us page that “We are proud of the South East’s heritage as the birthplace of the Paralympic Games. Accentuate will now carry the baton to continue this journey ensuring disabled people have the potential to be the leaders of tomorrow, in whatever field they choose. Accentuate also strives to create a permanent change in the way disability is viewed by society.”
They continue to outline their aims and outcomes as:
- That every young disabled person in the South East has the opportunity to create, compete or collaborate with a young person in another competitor country during the lead up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
- That the South East becomes the most welcoming and accessible region for disabled people in the UK.
- That the South East region is recognised as a lead region in the UK for disability and deaf cultural activity and as an international centre of excellence.
- That the South East’s role as the birthplace of the Paralympic movement at Stoke Mandeville is recognised by the world and that its historic archive and the individual histories of Paralympian athletes alongside the impact of the movement itself is explored by artists, and young people in the South East.
- That people across the South East have raised awareness of and are inspired by the values of personal best, going for gold and excellence and are offered strategies to help them to adopt these values in their own lives.

The Park House Hotel in Sandringham is operated by the Charity Leonard Cheshire Disability and has a high standard of access for those with reduced mobility. The hotel is located in the Sandringham Royal Estate surrounded by beautiful gardens and trees. It is also conveniently located close to the market town of King’s Lynn.
Park House has a total of 16 bedrooms for guests with disabilities, 8 of which are single and the other 8 are twins. All of the bedrooms are accessible (furniture may be moved for specific requirements), some rooms have overhead tracking hoist, while other mobile hoists also available, all beds have electric raising and lowering. The main hotel rooms are all ensuite, either wet room or bath with shower over. Toilet raisers, portable rails and commodes are also available.
