Accommodation Types

HOTELS:

Hotel – A minimum of 6 bedrooms, but usually have 20+

Small Hotel – Up to 20 bedrooms and more personally run

Country House Hotel – Set in a rural or semi-rural location, hotel will have ample grounds or gardens. Emphasis on peace and quiet

Town House Hotel – In a city or town-centre location.  Distinctive style. Max 50 guests. Room service available but dining facilities may vary.

Metro Hotel – City or town-centre location. Full hotel services but no dinner. Located within walking distance of a variety of places to eat

Budget Hotel – Part of a large branded hotel group, offering limited services.  Budget Hotels are not awarded star ratings by accessing bodies.

Restaurant with Rooms – The main business is a licensed restaurant but with a small number of rooms. Breakfast is often included

Serviced Apartments – City or town-centre location. Offering hotel services such as daily cleaning and concierge but with a kitchen and lounge area more like a self-catering establishment.

GUEST ACCOMMODATION:

Guest Accommodation – Covers a wide range of establishments from one-room B&B’s to larger properties.  Facilities and services available vary.

Bed & Breakfast – Sleeping up to 6 people, the owners welcome you into their home as a special guest

Guest House – Normally more than 3 rooms.  Dinner is unlikely to be available or must be booked in advance.  May be licensed.

Farmhouse – Bed & breakfast, sometimes dinner.  Always on a farm.

Inn – Pubs with rooms, and many with restaurants as well.

SELF CATERING:

Self Catering – A wide variety of accommodation available from town-centre apartments to cosy country cottages, seaside villas to windmills.  Bookings are mostly on a weekly basis but short breaks may be available.

Approved Caravan Holiday Homes – Let as individual self-catering units and located on farms or holiday parks.  All facilities are contained within the caravan and all main services provided.

Chalets – Permanent buildings used as seasonal holiday accommodation, made mostly from timber.

Campus Accommodation – This includes all accommodation available through educational establishments, good for individuals, families or groups.  Availability is mainly throughout the academic holidays; however, some universities provide accommodation all year round.

CAMPING & CARAVAN PARKS:

Camping Park – Sites only have pitches available for tents

Touring Park – Pitches available for caravan’s, motor homes or tents

Holiday Park – If you want to hire a caravan holiday home or are looking to buy a holiday home, holiday parks are the right choice. They range from small, rural sites to larger parks with added extras such as a pool or onsite shop.

Holiday Village – Comprise of a variety of accommodation types with the majority in custom-built rooms (e.g. chalets). A range of facilities, entertainment and activities are provided (these may, or may not, be included in the tariff).

Forest Holiday Village – A holiday village (see above) situated in a forest setting with conservation and sustainable tourism being key features.

HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION:

Hostel – Safe, budget-priced, short-term accommodation for individuals and groups.  Visitors usually share a dormitory as well as lounge, bathroom and kitchen.  In higher star-rated hostels sometimes have en suite bedrooms and may offer meals.

Group Hostel – Hostels that predominantly accept group bookings.

Activity Accommodation – Caters predominantly for groups and provides fully certified or licensed activities for visitors.  May be self catering or fully licensed.

Backpacker – Similar to hostels, but tend to cater for younger, longer-term independent travellers rather than groups or families. Usually operate on a less rigid basis and offer 24-hour access to guests.

Bunkhouse – Similar style of accommodation to hostels but usually with more limited services and facilities. Often run on a self-catering basis.

Camping Barn – Often referred to as ‘stone tents’, camping barns provide very simple self catering accommodation and have the advantage of being spacious and dry.
